Using ‘Wordwall’ in English Class

Using ‘Wordwall’ in  English Class

Wordwall’is a platform designed for teachers to create interactive and engaging activities for language teaching. It can be interactive as a game online or a printed quiz. It not only arises student's interest in English, deepens their understanding of new vocabulary, but also lets them work as a group to collaborate or compete. In language teaching, it could also be a review check of concepts which helps to identify areas where students may need additional support.

How to create an activity in Wordwall ?

Making a preparation for the content ahead of time, and then choose a certain template according to the information involved. 'Wordwall' offers a range of activities, including quiz, crosswords, maze chase or airplane. In addition, the same content can be switched to a different activity by clicking a single button- ‘switch template’. It is amazing to engage students in different kinds of games in class. Also, it can be edited even it is finished. However, it may effect negatively when teacher is not familiar with technology and it may easily distract student’s attention from the following teaching parts.

My own experience of using ‘wordwall’ in class

This week, I implemented the ‘wordwall’ into my English vocabulary class. The topic of my class is about ‘Sports and Fitness’, and the aim is to learn several new words, such as ‘immune system’, ‘strength’, ‘feel down’, etc. There are two groups in my class, so I made two different kinds of activities for them, the first one is 'match up', and the other one is 'find the match'.

The content is the key words and phrases in the topic, and it differs in different groups. Students may find it complicated while reading to many definitions then I inserted some pictures to make it simple.

Overall, I found students were interested in the vocabulary game and they helped each other in the group work. It is hard to believe that students could get full correct answers in the activity.

Thank you for reading with me, I am looking forward to your comments!
